Happy Birthday
(Frodel, El-Darrell, Elder Roundy)
Darrell!

Our Shadows at Disneyland                A Cool Picture of the Man right before his mission                  Uncle Darrell & Paisley

I liked Darrell from the moment I met him.  So Maybe a lot of that was his totally rad hair, but hair can say a lot about a person, especially if its a fro!  He went from being my buddy to being my brother, from throwing ping-pong balls at Spencer and I to keep us in line prenuptuals, to throwing questions at us about girls.  Something familial just clicked in me with Darrell from the start.  I think I fell for Darrell (in a sister way) before I fell for Spencer (in a romantic way)!  I  have always felt a special kinship with him.  He is a truly special person, and very special to me.  We easily became buddies and I think we always felt comfortable around each other.

fun at the Corn Maze                         what a handsome young lad!          after his winning publicity performance
(the hat in the middle is Cado)

saying goodbye to Darrell

I have such fond memories of early morning, and mid-day and evening for that matter, biking excursions just the three of us--Spencer, Darrell and I; of music-listening sessions, and of so many really good talks.  I feel lucky that Darrell always felt comfortable confiding in us, in talking to us about anything--sad or happy, confusing or blissful, frustrated or content.  He came to us for advice and felt we had something valuable to offer.  That always made me feel special and important.  He always seemed mature for his age in some ways, and has impressed me with his capacity to learn from life--his and others' mistakes and to think about things.  Sometimes he would say he thought too much.  That is one way we are similar.  Darrell is so full of life and passion.  He's fun and funny, clever and creative, yet he is also serious when appropriate, strong, and smart.  He's not afraid of a challenge, and seems to welcome opportunities to grow.  It was amazing to see him throw himself so fully and unabashedly into running for and winning the publicity chair position in student council.  I saw how responsible he could be and his capacity for leadership, among many other things.  There are a lot of things I could say about Darrell and stories I could tell, for now I hope this short tribute is enough to show how much he means to me.

Darrell, I count your life and friendship a great blessing in mine.  I'm glad your mom persisted in bringing you into the world even if your strength made her life difficult for the first ? years of your life!  I know she can join me in saying she's glad too, and that it was all worth it.  I also know that we are among many who can say this, and that more are being added every day as you give your love and service to everyone around you.

Here here!  or is it Hear hear?

Wonderfully written, I couldn't agree more with Harmony (...and Lauren).

May I also say that my wife is awesome!
Darrell on Monday April 16, 2007
Wow,  thanks Harmony!  I loved it.  First off all, I can't believe I used to weigh 20 pounds less, I'm going to have to do something about that.  Harmony, I had a dream last night that when I got home from the mission I went directly to your house (don't tell mom).  I was trying to explain to you that I still had 13 months to go and I shouldn't be there, but you and Spencer just ingnored me and then spencer showed me his CD collection.  It might have been a trunky dream, but it was good to see you guys.  Thanks for your love and support.  See my blog!

wish I could have been there (in the dream)!  Wherever we are when you get home, I hope you do come visit us, even stay awhile.  Love you!

Darrell- the fact is, you used to only weigh 20 pounds, I remember when you did.  This is a very nice tribute, Harmony and I really appreciate the good influence you and Spencer have had on Darrell.  I love it when you all are a good influence on each other, and Darrell, you are havimg a very  good influence on us all, as well as the people in Brazil.  Be happy and eat mashed potato hot dogs or something Brazilian for your birthday.  love, dad

This is a wonderful tribute, Harmony.  I appreciate the friendship that you and Spencer had with Darrell.  After Lauren left on his mission and Darrell had no siblings at home, you provided him with true friendship. He had wonderful friends but he needed family friends.  Thank you for fulfilling those needs.  I know he will always have a special place in his heart for both of you.

I actually got sick on my Birthday...Can you believe that?  it was only the second time that I've gotten sick on the mission.  but we worked anyway

“HE IS NOT HERE, FOR HE IS RISEN.”

“O DEATH, WHERE IS THY STING? O GRAVE, WHERE IS THY VICTORY?”

I am so grateful for the knowledge I have of these things.  It was wonderful to reflect yesterday on the life and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to reflect on the first Easter.  God loves us so he sent His Son to die for us, so that each of us can have immortality and eternal life.  Death is not the end because God descended below all things, was crucified, and rose on the third day.  I enjoy Easter for the egg-hunts, candy, baskets, bunnies, friends & family, but I REJOICE because of the    sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Yesterday we began our day with a morning family devotional.  We read some scriptures, looked at some pictures, shared our testimonies and watched a movie called “Finding Faith in Christ.”  The movie depicts scenes from Christ’s ministry—miracles, teachings, and his death and resurrection.  Cado and Paisley were surprisingly attentive.  Later, while taking a bath, Cado said, “Faith is believing.”  It was one of those satisfying parent moments.  He’s an amazing kid.

After watching it, Spencer remembered that we had an extra copy and we decided to bring it to our neighbors across the street as an Easter gift.  Fortunately they were home and we had a nice visit with them for quite a while.  They were appreciative of the gift. They are warm and friendly and we’ve enjoyed having them as our neighbors.

Then we returned home for our final preparations for church and the afternoon with Family.  I had to prepare the activity for nursery (18 mos—3 yr. old kids) and Spencer got everything for the kids ready and made jello (thanks!)

Church was really good.  They put together a great program with touching and powerful musical numbers, mixed in with quotes and scriptures.  We caught as much as we could in between wrestling with, keeping busy and silencing our children!  Then it was off to nursery for the next two hours for me and the kids and Spencer went to substitute teach a lesson in Gospel Doctrine class on the Bread of Life.  I had 2 helpers in nursery and one of them organized all the toys for me!  Yay!  It went well.  We went on an egg-hunt to find pieces of paper with scenes from Jesus’ life and then they all made a little book with the papers. At the end I caught someone in the hall who had extra cupcakes that he offered to me, so I gave them to the kids, and that was the quietest while messiest 15 minutes of the day!

We came back home to grab some things and headed off for Mom & Dad Child’s.  I gave Doreen a makeover and took some pictures of her and Brian.  I think they turned out good.  Because I did that I completely spaced on making the "funeral" potatoes I planned on making.  So Mom Roundy, I can't tell you how those turned out!   Fortunately, the meal turned out great without them.  It was a marvelous meal prepared by Mom and Dad.  Lamb, red potatoes, citrus salad, cold & crisp asparagus with vinaigrette (surprisingly good), rolls, olives, deviled eggs, jello.  It was very good, and just the right amount of different things.  Josh and Jeff joined us for dinner which was nice.  Everyone enjoyed the meal, except for Cado who had eaten around 20 peeps during the first hour of being there!  He was also caught later with a chocolate bunny hiding underneath the dining room table!

We had a quick Easter egg hunt for the kids.  Paisley has really been into carrying a little pail around lately, so she caught on really quick and enjoyed putting the eggs into her basket (or paper bag as was the case at the ward party).  Our ward had put on a big Easter party the day before on Saturday at the park.  It was a great party.  I met a woman at a different park a couple weeks ago named Tonya (or Teka) with two little girls.  We decided we might make good friends and exchanged phone numbers.  I invited her and her family to the party and they came!  She said she had a good time and we got along great.  We hunted for eggs, the Easter bunny came, we made crafts, ate food, they even had a softball game (but we didn’t participate in that.)  That night we had the missionaries over for dinner (yummy enchiladas) and that was really nice too.  While we’re flashing back, I’ll add that on Friday we went to my parents house and decorated Easter eggs.  The kids had a lot of fun with that, but as usual, I think my mom and I had more!

After the Easter egg hunt at my parents we sat around and talked.  I think Doreen is really becoming part of the family and seems to be more open and natural and relaxed around us.  It was really enjoyable to visit.  Then my mom unveiled her amazing pies—there were three—banana cream, strawberry and lemon meringue.  They were all amazing and in perfect harmony with the season and the rest of the day.  My mom also put together baskets for everyone, and they were all filled with special, meaningful things for each person as well as lots of Easter candy.  Cado honed in on his right away because he has an eye for all things Toy Story and his basket had a Woody toy in it.

We finished the evening with more visiting, and the kids took their traditional Grammi’s house bath.  It was a lovely weekend.  My only regret is I didn’t take more pictures.  Sometimes I want to free myself of the burden of life historian & photojournalist, but whenever I do I end up regretting it.  I hope you enjoy what I did take!  Love to All!

Very nice blog, you are wonderful at being the photojournalist, and historian for our family.  Thank you and I love you!!! It really was a great day, and I am very thankful for my testimony of Christ and the ressurection.  I love our family, and am grateful everyday to my Heavenly Father for all of my blessings.

Drumroll please . . . Paisley can now wear a barette in her hair!
While I realize this really doesn't call for a drumroll, it is nevertheless exciting for Paisley's hair&beauty-loving mom.  I have  patiently awaited the time when her hair was just long enough to torture and pinch into a clip of some sort.

Well, we're there folks!  I comb that fine, fragile baby hair into a bunch as Paisley wriggles and writhes and I carefully clip it into the only thing I happened to have around--plastic colored clips I wore as a teenager.  And I must say, for me it's all worth it.  Just look at her and tell me thats not adorable!  And with a little spray and some teasing I even coax some curl out of her angelic pale-blond locks.

True dad - however, I must say that she doesn't always look like that.  And sometimes she screams.  But normally she gets mostly what she wants.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

We are writing our Christmas Letter Update in blog form this year.  Here goes.

It has been a wonderful year, starting off with one of the most intense, difficult, and joyous occasions of my life, the birth after 30+ hrs. of labor, of my stunningly gorgeous, adorable baby girl Paisley July on January 22nd.  I can’t believe she is almost 1 yr. old!  That makes me sad.  Watching my kids grow up causes many opposite feelings to come all at once.   She is our Pleasant Paisley as most of the time she is a happy and content, but when she’s not, watch out!  She can really scream.  She started walking at 9 months and is the cutest little thing walking all over the place with her happy demeanor.  She is a lover and loves to give kisses and loves and cuddle.  She has always been a momma’s girl which has been wonderful, and at times a bit difficult.  She is still nursing which helps her stay my little baby.  She is very musical and can dance like nobody’s business!  She has moves you didn’t know an 11 month old could have!  She loves her brother Cado and nobody can make her smile, giggle and squeal (and cry) like he can!  For Christmas she got a lot of musical toys as well as a little phone, and a baby and some dolls which she is now getting into. She walks around carrying them and patting them and giving them love.  Paisley was blessed on my Dad’s & friend Krystal’s birthday on March 12th, and that was a wonderful time to be with family and celebrate the joy of the gospel and life.

Cado continues to amaze and astound, and confound his parents.  He is quite the smart little whippersnapper.  He is a whirlwind of energy, imagination and conversation. That boy can talk!  We’re not sure where he could have gotten that from.  Chuckle, wheez, guffaw.  (to borrow from an uncle of mine)  He has a few passions: Buzz Lightyear, Jack Sparrow/Pirates, Superman/Superheroes, Weapons—namely swords and guns, Stripey (his tiger), his many favorite movies, going to the park and Grammi’s and Disneyland, and especially imaginative play.  He is quite independent in his play and I love to just observe him when he is lost in his own make-believe world.  I also love to get involved in it with him, and he is our little buddy.  We have lots of fun together.  With the exception of his screaming tantrum fits where all he can say, no yell, is “NO!”, he is a very sweet and obedient child.  He says, “I love you too mommy” out of the blue, and “you look so cute/handsome,” and when I’ve been out of sight for a while or in the morning he’ll say, “Oh, Hi Mommy!” and smile and laugh really sweet.  In so many ways he acts and talks older than he is.  He loves friends and is very friendly.  And when he is around other kids, especially older ones, he really acts older.  His mannerisms and expressions keep us all on our toes and laughing.  He shoots my own words back at me at times in painful ways, like when he says, “that’s not nice mommy!” or “don’t talk at me.” (don’t talk back to me.)  He loves to bear his testimony at church and has no fear.  He already knows a lot about His Savior Jesus Christ and it is a joy to watch his testimony grow.

I haven’t accomplished much this year besides raising my two cuties.  I have had some photography work with my company Harmony Photography  & Beauty and my Dad, including some weddings, engagments, bridals and family portraits.  Of course I take way too many pictures of my kids.  I decided that I wasn't doing well trying to have a successful Mary Kay business as well as Photography, so I have chosen to focus on Photography, however I will continue to be an MK consultant and make a few orders a year.  I have managed to almost completely lose the baby weight, mainly by taking walks to the park and being a little more conscious of my diet, as well as doing Pilates every once in awhile (with a video).  I also had a calling, which I just got released from as Teacher Improvement Coordinator, and have just been called as the Ward Chorister and to work on the Roadshow (play/skit).  I am a little nervous about the first and really excited about the second.  I spend a lot of time with my mom and family and we enjoy having them close.  We took some trips: went to Utah to say Farewell to Spencer’s brother Darrell in April for his mission in Brazil, then went back in July to say Farewell to Spencer’s Grandma Coleman at her funeral, then I went back in October for my mom’s family’s Women’s Retreat.   We went to Fairfield CA in June to see my Dad’s side of the family.  And we went camping in August in Lake Arrowhead.

Spencer has had another good year with KPMG.  He enjoys his work, and they enjoy him.  He is the Teacher’s Quorum (leader of 14-16 yr. old young men) Advisor at church and does a great job with those boys.  He took them to Havasupai in July and has gone on other outings with them.  He has of course worked on this website as well as done some other web design work.  He has recently gotten back to mountain biking and is really enjoying that.  For one of my Christmas gifts we went biking together (my first time since spring of 2005) today and will go another time before he has to go back to work.

We have been inspired by Darrell and our Church leaders to try to be better missionaries and share the joy we experience from the gospel with others.  We are grateful for our membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and encourage any non-members to visit www.mormon.org to find out about our beliefs.  We hope, like Darrell, to become more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ this year and strive to serve and think more of others.  We love you all and hope all is well and that this year proves to be one of happiness and growth for you and your family.

Love,

The Roundys

(p.s. When will I learn!! Don’t write a blog here!  Write it in Word first!  I wrote about half of this and then lost it, and had to do it all again!)

OH, as far as Cado's adjustment to having a baby sister, he has done really well.  He has moments of jeolousy and experiments with what will happen if . . . but over all, he is a good big brother.  He is concerned about her and wants to know where she is and they giggle and laugh a lot.  She follows him around and he loves having a little friend.  He tries to "mother" her sometimes, and I let him know he's not the mom.  He is learning how to be sweet and take care of her, and I think the jeolousy is fading.

I hope a picture really does say a thousand words, because that is all I seem to be adding lately.  Pictures of Cado have a good chance of saying that many because he is sooo expressive, dramatic, active and says at least that many every day!  He is so talkative, and wants everything and everyone else to talk too! "Stripey talks!" He shoves Stripey in my face with that command which means I need to use my Stripey voice and talk to Cado with Stripey in my hand.  He does it with almost anything.  Sometimes he'll pick up non-character items like his food and say "he talks."  he cracks me up constantly.  Tonight he was sooo hyper and we were hanging out on our bed--spencer and cado and I.  And he stood up and put his hands on his hips and got his serious adult face on and said, "what are those pictures doing?" referring to the pictures on our wall.  "nothing Cado."  "those are dee-diculous."  He imitates adult conversation and body language and especially his mom's words like "goodness gracious, oh my word, oh gosh! and ridiculous."  Well here's a smattering of photos from me and the kids and my mom's October trip to Utah.  Enjoy!

Last night it was like Cado was being an Interior designer.  He would point at something, say it had to go, it was ridiculous.  He was totally acting, putting on a show for us.  It was great.

Words of Wisdom I hope I can remember and live by!
"We women have a lot to learn about simplifying our lives. We have to decide what is important and then move along at a pace that is comfortable for us. We have to develop the maturity to stop trying to prove something. We have to learn to be content with what we are." -Marjorie Pay Hinckley "I don't want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails. I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp. I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick neighbors children. I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone's garden. I want to be there with children's sticky kisses on my cheeks and the tears of a friend on my shoulder. I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived." -Marjorie Pay Hinckley
