It’s baaaack. Remember S-CHIP? The Democrats are racing their universal health care Trojan Horse through the House today and in the Senate by Friday. Yesterday evening after I filed my syndicated column (printed below) on Obama and the Democrats’ first massive tax increase of 2009, the 285-page text of the proposed S-CHIP expansion went online. It’s H.R. 2 and you can read the PDF in its entirety here — something a significant number of congressional members will not do before voting for the behemoth bill. The tax portion of the bill is broken out here (thanks to the Stogie Guys). Pelosi’s press release is here.

Every legal tobacco product from premanufactured cigarettes and cigarette papers to cigars to roll-your-cigarettes, pipe tobacco, and smokeless tobacco will be taxed out the wazoo. Take roll-your-own tobacco. It’s currently taxed at $1.0969/lb. The Obama/Democrat S-CHIP plan would hike that to $24.62/lb. Cigarette taxes would rise from $19.50 per thousand to $50.00 per thousand for small cigarettes and from $40.95 per thousand to $105.00 per thousand for large cigarettes.......

Continue reading the rest at the link above if you're interested. This is for anybody who wanted to know about the new S-Chip initiative that is going to raise taxes for our "children" by taxing the....poor?

I have never been one for taxing one particular industry.  Even though I don't smoke, I don't agree with regressive taxes like this.  I see too many other things that will be targeted just like this.  Whole industries and livelyhoods can be ruined by voting in these type of taxes.

Not the mention, the money that is supposidy gong to children is not. Ever single state in the country is using a lot of the funds for other things. Michigan alone used 70% of what was supposed to go to children on single men and women/other.

So we are going to over tax a product, kill off an industry like the cigar industry who entire countries economies rely on for what? This is just stupid. Good luck to the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua which is going to get hammered. This is going to kill people in those countries for our kids!! Yay. Good job by the politicians on realizing the difference between the cigarette and cigar industry. They target different audiences, they are completely different product with completely different health hazards. Stupid all around.

Well Josh, I am glad to see you are taking an active interest in what our government is doing.  Now make sure you let your representatives know how you feel.  I have written my senators and my congressman urging them to vote against the stimulus bill.  They all voted for it anyway, but atleast I registered my disappointment. I will continue to write them when a piece of legislation that I feel strongly about comes across their desk.

Good for you Marin, we all need to be active in stating our opinions to our senators and congressmen when we disagree or agree with them.

I just want to thank the American taxpayer: first for my retired Army pay; second, for my civil service pay check.  Public service, at least when you are a Fed, pays well enough, but the important thing is that it is consistent.  I know Grandpa feels the same way!
