Do you have something to say but not much time?  You want to keep in touch with your family and friends but can't dedicate the time to writing a full blog or posting an album.  Did something just happen and you just want to quickly shout it out (good or bad)?  Find a cool website you want to share?

Then just microblog it!  I am super excited about the new microblogging feature (named Roundeo) that is now available on Roundbook.com.  It is a more interactive and intelligent way of sharing links (previously interests), a quick message, a picture, a video and profile comments. It's called Roundeo because it's cool that way.

Roundeo makes interacting online more human because you can keep in touch on the little things too and while you think the little things aren't important - they are important to those we love and keep us more connected.

Roundeo gives you the same control you have over everything you do on Roundbook.  Share your quick message with anyone or just certain groups of people.  Roundeo also integrates with everything else - your home page compiles your Roundbook blogs, photos, calendar events, and Roundeo microblogs along with everyone in your groups.  It's one quick place to stay connected.  When others come to your profile page they see all of your Roundbook, including your Roundeo microblogs in order of date posted.

Don't be shy.  Share the "less important" but actually more interesting things that happen in your life quickly.  Your family and friends really care.  Start posting Roundeo microblogs.

roundbook I also own Roundeo.com. For now it points to Roundbook.com, but may become a stand alone service in the future that shares Roundbook functionality.

roundbook Roundeo is microblogging. It is where you can share a short message, interesting web page or link, or a picture instead of writing a full blog or creating a photo album. It's quick and simple. It is a more interactive and intelligent way of sharing links (previously interests) and Roundbook profile comments. It's called Roundeo because it's cool that way.

It's basic for the moment, but will gain functionality quickly.

For years (yep, I'm sorry to say its been years) the calendar on Roundbook has enthusiastically stated "Coming soon...", well How Soon is Now?

You can now use the Roundbook Calendar to schedule events and let others know about them.  I admit readily, that the current functionality is limited.  For the moment, you can only send event notices to people inside of Roundbook.  But that part is being worked on.  In the future (hopefully near future), you'll be able to schedule any kind of event and attach your photo albums, blogs, etc. to it.  You'll be able to keep RSVP lists and send people a link to your event.

For the moment, at least check it out:

You can add events, comment on them, and tag them.  Your calendar can be shown in normal grid calendar view or as a list.  The events also show the birthdays of the people you are connected to.

Any ideas on what would be great to add?  Let us know.

For now - Enjoy!

Maybe you've noticed this at the bottom of yours and others' blogs and photos:

But why, what is it, why do you want it, how do you use it?

Tags are a fairly common occurence on the Internet these days.  The problem is how to label all the different information out there to make it recognizable.  The response is by using tags.  The computer doesn't know that a picture of your dog is a picture of your dog.  But if you tag that picture of your dog as "My Dog" and every picture of your dog as "My Dog", then pretty soon you can easily find all pictures of your dog.

So view tags as a way to organize your Roundbook stuff.  Your tags are put in a tag cloud under your profile:

You can see that the Roundbook blog has certain topics that it blogs about, mainly dealing with improvements and how to do stuff.  The tags that appear the most often are the largest in the tag cloud.  When you click on the tag cloud link for "My People" you'd see all blogs with that tag.

Tags are are really easy to add, just click on the Add a tag link, then start typing.  You can add multiple tags to one item, or just add one.  You add multiple by putting a comma between each tag.

Tips for good tagging:
  • Keep them consistent.  If you write a lot of book reviews, tag each book review as "Book Review".  Don't tag some "Reviews", and others "Books".  Also, keep tags consistent in plurality - to a tag, Books is different than Book.
  • Use multiple tags to group by general categories then by more specific ones too.  For example:  Book Review, Fiction, Science Fiction would give you three tags for one posting, but allow you to group that posting with general and specific posts that are related.
  • Use tags to guide others to the different things you write about.  This gives a type of theme to your Roundbook.  Here are some examples of tags that allow you to use Roundbook as a way to create themes for what you share:
    • Recipes
    • Favorite Movies
    • Favorite Music
    • Quotes I Like
    • Person's name (e.g. John, Sue)
Hope you like the tagging abilities - with more tagging enhancements planned as well.

Enjoy!

When Roundbook was first started, one of the "revolutionary" plans to implement was the idea of Guest passes.  So.... Here it is!

Roundbook lets you create safe and private blogs that only your family and friends.  However, up until now - those friends and family have needed a Roundbook.com account or you've needed to make some of your content public.

You can now send people a Guest Pass.  This will provide them special login details that will allow them to see your site content for a specified group.

With the guest pass they can:
  • see content meant for them (content sent to a particular group).
  • make comments on your content.
  • convert  their guest pass to a roundbook.com account that will automatically connect them to you and attribute all their comments to their new account.
With a guest pass you can:
  • share your Roundbook content privately with more people
  • share Roundbook with others without the commitment for them to sign up.
  • determine what your guests can see.
  • determine how long a guest pass is valid (e.g. one month, one year, or delete it at any time).

Here's how it works - when they login, here's what they see on top of your site:

You can send guest passes by clicking on My People then the Guest Pass tab:

If you want, you can send yourself a guest pass to see how it works, then delete it later.

Then - share, share, share.  Hoping this makes sharing safely with Family and Friends even easier.

To come:  Guest passes for individual content and the ability for others to request guest passes.

Customize your groups of people with the ability to rename them and reorder them.

You can rename a group, so you don't always have to keep the name you gave it originally.  Pretty simple.

The cool thing, (I think) is that you can move the order that your groups show up.  The first group becomes your default group:

To reorder you groups, just drag the groups to the order you want.  Then Click "Save Group Order".

The default group is the default group for adding invites, filtering, etc.

Enjoy!

That's how good it is - good enough to use poor grammar.  With great intentions to make it even better by bringing in outside content - like what are you doing on other websites, what other blogs have you posted, etc.

So for now, enjoy the profile page as a quick glance at yourself and others on Roundbook.com.  It's also really easy to get to now by using the "Profile" tab write next to the home tab on the home page.

Enjoy!

Want to add a video to your blog, or only have video - thus creating a video blog?  Roundbook.com has decided at this point to, rather than create a new video system, use current ones, like YouTube.

So how do you do it?

Click on Write a blog and then choose "Add video to your blog", or click directly on Video Blog.  Either way, you get this.  Enter your videos embed code and click Add to Blog:

Enjoy!

Roundbook.com has a more colorful design - if you hadn't already noticed.  Taking from the colors of the logo, blue, green, and red.   The design is more bold, more colorful, and I think, more interesting.

A lot of new designs have been added for you to customize your site.  More will be coming too.

Just go to your profile, then click on Customize.  Here's what's available so far:

Enjoy!  and stay a while.

I use skype for keeping in contact with family mainly.  It's an easy application that allows us to talk to each other and have video calls for free.  However, skype has some weak points that can cause some online safety and privacy concerns for yourself or for children using it.  With its default settings, anyone can see your profile and try to contact you.  If you let anyone try to contact you, then you may be a target of inappropriate solicitations.  I have received unsolicited chats, to which I never respond (they main point to safety is to restrict your interactions online to only people you know that you know - see here).  The chat box pops up with sometimes a benign "hello" or other times explicit content.  The user trying to contact me sometimes has a profile picture that displays next to the chat.  So I looked around to see what can be done to make my skype presence safer, and more private, yet still be able to use the service.

There are a few settings you can change that make a big difference though, so here they are, and here's how and why to set them:

First:  Disable and Don't Use "SkypeMe"
"SkypeMe" is an online status you can set.  I originally thought it was the same thing as "Online" but also announcing that you were waiting or wanting people to call and chat.  However, "SkypeMe" disables all privacy settings, meaning anyone can contact you.  Therefore, in order to enable privacy settings and keep them in place, announce yourself as "Online" and never as "SkypeMe".

Second:  Enable Privacy Settings
1.  You can get to your privacy settings by clicking on File > Privacy...

2.  Choose "Only allow people in my Contact List to contact me".  Don't forget to Save at the bottom, otherwise the changes won't stay.

And you are done.  Now you can use the software as a great tool for keeping in touch with people you want to keep in touch with.
-----
Here are a couple more ideas, if you want them.
  • You may change your Calls and Chat privacy settings separately in the respective sections.  If you decide to enable anyone to chat with you, I suggest disabling the "Open a chat window when someone starts to chat with me" option in advanced features under chat.  This will keep their profile picture from coming up on your screen automatically when someone starts to chat.
  • To keep children from using skype without your supervision, disable it from starting up and signing in automatically.  If your child has their own skype account, you can have the password and not allow them to know the password.  Then they must come to you to sign in.
  • It seems like, as I am a young male in my profile, I got more unsolicited invites than my wife without privacy settings.  You could consider not setting your gender in your profile.
  • I'm still working to figure out how to best protect against unsolicited invites to skype, the above settings seems to only protect against calls and chats, not adding someone as a contact.  I'll update when I have more detail on this.

Something that's been in planning for a long time, from before my move to Switzerland, was to make changes to the design of Roundbook.com to make the experience easier - hence the major redesign.
  • Profile is on the right - done to put the focus on the content.
  • Profile is changed to be more helfpul - done to make it more clear whose Roundbook site you are on, and to provide quick access to common tasks.
  • Profile indicates whether you are connected to the person whose site you are on (if you are someone else's site).
  • My People - shows the people, instead of hiding them.
  • My interests - nicer look/feel.
  • Video Blog - easily add youtube or other external site videos to your blogs.
  • Comments - cleaner design
  • Blogs - picture of person who wrote the blog next to the blog title.
There may be other things that are new, and a lot of other new things coming, with some more radical changes that focus the site on the profile of the person, and the content they've created.

I personally think it makes quite a few things easier to do, plus it makes my work easier in adding newer functionality.  I suggest you take a look around, and let me know what you'd like to make this even better.

Of course, with change, it may take a while to get used to it, but I think you'll find that it is for the better, and the core of Roundbook hasn't changed - connect with family and friends!  Its awesome!

Technical details:  If you are having trouble using the site in your Internet browser, make sure you are using the latest version of your browser.  I highly suggest using firefox (get it here), or Internet Explorer 7 (get it here).  In fact, those are the only two fully supported browsers for Roundbook.com.  I'd like to ensure usability for all browsers, but I unfortunately don't have the time.

So far I really like the new design.  Much sleeker.  Easier navigation.  Where's the cool Flash picture viewer?  I miss that.  Sorta.  It was in the way a bit.  Can you eventually add functionality so that we can actually provide a "favorite music playlist" thingy that we can have on the side so that people can hear some of our favorite songs?  How do other blogs do that?

It's a good thing you changed some of the look and feel.  I was about to start another blog of my own on Blogger.com.

I might still, but I'll always double post, one here, one there.
spencer on Thursday February 7, 2008

Thanks Lauren.  I appreciate the positive feedback.

The cool flash viewer went the way of the... I don't know actually which way it went.  It has been replaced with a simple view of photos albums, in the order they were posted along with blogs; meaning that if I post a blog, then three photo albums, then a blog, you'll see all in order on my home page.  As for the old one - what you may not have realized is that it actually hasn't been a flash viewer for about a year now, most recently it was more AJAX based.  A more improved version of that will be coming back, but per album, to replace the small thumbnails.

My plea for you to not move to Blogger - please don't do it.  Personally I've tried it and I feel like I have a lot more freedom here on Roundbook over who can see my posts.  I can also post photo albums (not possible on Blogger), and I'm connected.

Also consider this - if you've got an idea of what would be great - you can tell me and I'll try to implement it (like the playlist idea - I'll look into it).  Try getting your voice heard like that by Google.

Finally - if you want a different color scheme - go to your profile, then styles.  If one you would like isn't there - tell me of a color scheme you'd like and I'll make one.  One of the things the new design provides is a faster way for me to make more styles.

Lauren on Friday February 8, 2008
Cool.

I won't move to blogger.  I'll just have to make more of my posts available to the world, so that I can send people who aren't signed up as family to my blog when needed.

One more thought, can I customize what shows up on the side of my page?  Like, what if I don't want the "New Design" box on the side?  What if I want to customize what is on the side (like, favorites including thumbnails, a music playlists (similar to those I've seen on blogger), etc...)

Thanks!
spencer on Friday February 8, 2008
So, do you know that you can choose to have certain posts "public", then people don't have to have an account and they can see.

I plan on adding a "widgets" piece, where you can add/remove sections and add pieces from other services on the internet.  But it won't be right away.

As for the "New Design" box - yes, that will go away shortly after a more sophisticated profile page is completed.  But the more sophisticated profile page will still have a section dedicated to telling you about what's new happening on Roundbook - just more discreet.
Lauren on Wednesday February 13, 2008
I like the widgets idea.  I think that is how you could integrate music players and stuff like that.

I did know about the public thing.  That's good to remember.

I like that the "What's New with Roundbook" stuff will be available on my page, but not in the way.

Overall, this is a tremendous site and I like it a lot.  I've officially decided not to go anywhere else for a blog.  I mean, who am I kidding, I don't have time to write blogs here, let alone somewhere else.

With a move halfway across the world, enhancements to Roundbook have slowed down.  However, I still did manage to create a new them for the Christmas season.  Enjoy the red and green of Christmas!  To get festive and start using it, click on the "My Profile" link at the top of your page:

Then click on the Preferences tab and choose the Christmas style:

Later on you can choose the other styles that fit your fancy.

You can also do this same thing by clicking on the "Settings" link next to your tabs on the home page.

Once again - MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Roundbook.com is made to keep people safe online.  We are very proud to offer our newest feature - Parent Control!

Parent control allows parent's to monitor and even control a child's account.  First a parent must enter details about the child to provide evidence that they have the right to monitor or control the child's account.  Then, the parent may at any time switch to the child's account from the Parent Control page.

This gives you parents complete control of the child's account, as if you the parent were logged on as the child.

Parent's can then manage who the child is connected to, who the child's blogs and pictures and other content is shown to, even monitor or change the child's profile or content if they feel it is necessary.

Finally, the parent will still have access to the child's account even if the child's password changes.

Children may request to be free from monitoring at any time.

To start using this feature to keep your children safe, go to "My People", then to "Parent Control".

Due to hardware failure on the server, the Roundbook.com site was down for about a 24 hour period starting May 29th.  This was as painful for me (if not more so) as it was for you.  I'm truly sorry.  The problem was out of our control.  But the problem is fixed now.  If you think you lost anything.  Please contact me, we'll fix it.

The features keep coming!  and quickly!  This ones quite simple, but makes a big difference.  Now when you go to your, or someone else's Pictures page, you first see all the picture albums.  When you click on an album, you can then see the pictures in that album.  You can go back to your albums and choose a different one:

So no more scrolling through a small list of albums to find the description of an album.  Just real quick look at all albums, with thumbnail of one image in that album!

Enjoy!

Picture viewing and such just got better!  You can now choose some options related to pictures when you are viewing them:

See the cool options at the top of image?  You have the choice to Download a full-size printable version of the picture.  You can also rotate the picture left 90 degrees, or right 90 degrees!  No more upside down and sideways pictures!

So for those of you who want more info on it; here's what you do.  View any picture on anyone's sight and
  1. Download printable pictures.  If a full size version of the picture is available, then click this link to go directly to the picture file.  You will need to then save the picture to your computer by clicking on the picture with the right mouse button and choosing to save the image.  The full size image is the original size uploaded by the user.
  2. Rotate pictures 90 degrees right or left.  If you are on your site the image will be saved in the new rotated position automatically.  If you are on someone else's site, it will only be temporary (while you are viewing that page).
Enjoy!

Now you can write a blog draft and save it for later.  You don't have to publish it for all to see right away.  Also, the draft is saved automatically while you write.

In our attempt to always make Roundbook.com better, we noticed that there are a few scenarios that needed improvement:
  1. You find yourself writing an amazing blog, you are almost done, then you realize you don't have time to finish it.  What do you do?  Before you had to save it somewhere else by copying and pasting it, or you had to publish the unfinished version and come back and edit it later.  Well NO MORE.  You can now save blogs as drafts and work on them and publish them later.  You even have a blog draft listing too:
  2. You want to attach a picture album but you haven't published your blog yet.  Well no worries, now the moment you open up to write a blog you can click on the "add photo album" link at attach a photo album.  The add photo album link is at the top of the page, just above the subject.
  3. Most annoying ever category: I know how many times I've been writing a blog on this site or others and something happens - the web browser closes, a kid comes in and pushes some key,  something out of control, and BAM  the blog is gone.  There is no getting it back and all the time you spent writing the perfect story was wasted.  I even tell myself that I'll write first in a word document, then copy and paste it online.  But when it comes down to it, I forget.  Problem solved!  As you type your blogs are saved automatically (see, it last saved my draft automatically at 8:29 a.m!

How do I add pictures?  I've been asked that more times than I should, which means this area needed improvements.  And I'll keep taking suggestions.  Basically, click on Add Pictures and it should be straightforward.  Here's the new way:

When you click on Add Pictures, you can start browsing for and adding pictures right away.  If you want to create a new album, you can either keep the date as the album name, or write your own.  If you want to add to an existing album, then all you need to do is select which album.

There's even a "help" link in the top right.  Follow that for more help.  I'll have to work on finding the time to add the help link to more pages.
