Something that's been in planning for a long time, from before my move to Switzerland, was to make changes to the design of Roundbook.com to make the experience easier - hence the major redesign.
  • Profile is on the right - done to put the focus on the content.
  • Profile is changed to be more helfpul - done to make it more clear whose Roundbook site you are on, and to provide quick access to common tasks.
  • Profile indicates whether you are connected to the person whose site you are on (if you are someone else's site).
  • My People - shows the people, instead of hiding them.
  • My interests - nicer look/feel.
  • Video Blog - easily add youtube or other external site videos to your blogs.
  • Comments - cleaner design
  • Blogs - picture of person who wrote the blog next to the blog title.
There may be other things that are new, and a lot of other new things coming, with some more radical changes that focus the site on the profile of the person, and the content they've created.

I personally think it makes quite a few things easier to do, plus it makes my work easier in adding newer functionality.  I suggest you take a look around, and let me know what you'd like to make this even better.

Of course, with change, it may take a while to get used to it, but I think you'll find that it is for the better, and the core of Roundbook hasn't changed - connect with family and friends!  Its awesome!

Technical details:  If you are having trouble using the site in your Internet browser, make sure you are using the latest version of your browser.  I highly suggest using firefox (get it here), or Internet Explorer 7 (get it here).  In fact, those are the only two fully supported browsers for Roundbook.com.  I'd like to ensure usability for all browsers, but I unfortunately don't have the time.

So far I really like the new design.  Much sleeker.  Easier navigation.  Where's the cool Flash picture viewer?  I miss that.  Sorta.  It was in the way a bit.  Can you eventually add functionality so that we can actually provide a "favorite music playlist" thingy that we can have on the side so that people can hear some of our favorite songs?  How do other blogs do that?

It's a good thing you changed some of the look and feel.  I was about to start another blog of my own on Blogger.com.

I might still, but I'll always double post, one here, one there.

Thanks Lauren.  I appreciate the positive feedback.

The cool flash viewer went the way of the... I don't know actually which way it went.  It has been replaced with a simple view of photos albums, in the order they were posted along with blogs; meaning that if I post a blog, then three photo albums, then a blog, you'll see all in order on my home page.  As for the old one - what you may not have realized is that it actually hasn't been a flash viewer for about a year now, most recently it was more AJAX based.  A more improved version of that will be coming back, but per album, to replace the small thumbnails.

My plea for you to not move to Blogger - please don't do it.  Personally I've tried it and I feel like I have a lot more freedom here on Roundbook over who can see my posts.  I can also post photo albums (not possible on Blogger), and I'm connected.

Also consider this - if you've got an idea of what would be great - you can tell me and I'll try to implement it (like the playlist idea - I'll look into it).  Try getting your voice heard like that by Google.

Finally - if you want a different color scheme - go to your profile, then styles.  If one you would like isn't there - tell me of a color scheme you'd like and I'll make one.  One of the things the new design provides is a faster way for me to make more styles.

Cool.

I won't move to blogger.  I'll just have to make more of my posts available to the world, so that I can send people who aren't signed up as family to my blog when needed.

One more thought, can I customize what shows up on the side of my page?  Like, what if I don't want the "New Design" box on the side?  What if I want to customize what is on the side (like, favorites including thumbnails, a music playlists (similar to those I've seen on blogger), etc...)

Thanks!

So, do you know that you can choose to have certain posts "public", then people don't have to have an account and they can see.

I plan on adding a "widgets" piece, where you can add/remove sections and add pieces from other services on the internet.  But it won't be right away.

As for the "New Design" box - yes, that will go away shortly after a more sophisticated profile page is completed.  But the more sophisticated profile page will still have a section dedicated to telling you about what's new happening on Roundbook - just more discreet.

I like the widgets idea.  I think that is how you could integrate music players and stuff like that.

I did know about the public thing.  That's good to remember.

I like that the "What's New with Roundbook" stuff will be available on my page, but not in the way.

Overall, this is a tremendous site and I like it a lot.  I've officially decided not to go anywhere else for a blog.  I mean, who am I kidding, I don't have time to write blogs here, let alone somewhere else.

The updated, upgraded, and better Roundbook.com is up and running.  And what do we have to show for it?

Not much

But that doesn't mean it isn't updated, upgraded, and better.  See here's what happened, I started trying to rollout some cool features about 6 months ago and realized that the site needed some major code organization work.  So instead of working on cool features, I've been doing that - reorganizing the code and while it doesn't make much of a difference as far as the way things look and work, here's what is different:
  1. Better Security - you can't see it, but its there.  The website is more secure now.
  2. Upgraded Server - the upgrade included going to a server with more ability to grow.
  3. Platform for fast development - now I can put more features on the site faster!
  4. A few things are easier to do - and those that aren't will get that way soon.
  5. User Friendly URLs.  Instead of some crazy thing to type into the browser, you could now simply type www.rounbook.com/username/blog and you'd go straight to your blogs.
But anyway, looking forward to much more and much cooler stuff soon.  Enjoy

And, of course, send any suggestions my way!

Same basic look, easier to use, faster to find what you want.
One of the challenges we have in offering a family and friend networking site with so many features (and more planned to come) is integrating the many features with ease of use. We are always searching for new ways to make the site easier to use. Our “Do Something” panel is on every page and at one click, you can see everything that you can do on the site. But we wanted to provide a quick glance at the features within the navigation, plus tell what’s pertinent to the page you are on. As a result, we have introduced a new, not totally different, improved navigation bar that provides the following:

Roundbook new navigation bar

Identifies the logged in user: This provides the logged in user’s name, profile link, logout, and help link.

Search field: Users can search people, blogs, and pictures from any page using the search field in the top right corner.
Main menu navigation bar: The navigation bar is still there, and we’ve added an Invite button in clear view. The biggest improvement for the navigation bar is the rollover options, and that introduces the submenu.
Submenu: Just underneath the main menu navigation bar is the submenu. The submenu provides the options for the current page. When a user rolls over a main menu button, the submenu also reveals what is to be found on the corresponding page. For example, if you are on the Blog page, the submenu will show you that you can write a blog, view blogs, etc. If, while on the blog page you mouse over the Pictures button, the submenu will show you the options for the pictures page, such as add pictures, view pictures, add an album, etc.
Hope you like it!

We’ve been wanting to change the top navigation for some time now but hadn’t found the right way to do it. And the biggest concern was - what if we change it too much, what if people got used to the old way? That’s always the danger of changing something fundamental. If core pieces always change, then they throw off the user and the site becomes less usable. In the end we decided that this design accomplishes a lot, is expandable (who know’s what we’ll add next), and really isn’t that different from the old navigation.

So enjoy!
