I went with my scout varsity team boys to the Temescal council Mountain Man Rendezvous at Camp Boseker this weekend.  After getting all the arrangements made, forms turned in, permission slips signed it was an absolutely fun time.  We went two leaders, me being one of them, and three boys.  In true mormon time and California fashion we left promptly at 5:00 p.m. (read 6:15 p.m.) and got there no time flat (read 2.5 hours with one of those sitting in traffic, and witnessed a major car accident).

Well, regardless we got there eventually, ate some good home made stew, then went to bed.  The Mountain Man Rendezvous is put on by some older guys that are really into scouting and is a lot of fun for guys because it involves stuff like shooting, archery, knife throwing, etc.

We woke up and had our safety class, then did the following activities in order:
  1. Start a fire with flint and steel only (pretty much).  This one didn't work the first time we tried, or the second time.  But then got it going finally our third try.
  2. Canoe racing.  The boys got second or third place overall.  But look at the video below to see how Kip (the other leader and I) did compared to the boys.
  3. Trapping and Hawk throwing.  They boys set animal traps, set them off, then through Hawks (tomahawks - hatchets) at a tree stump target and had to stick it.
  4. Tabor tossing - imagine a 50 pound tree trunk that you have to throw as far as you can, and get it to flip.
  5.  Black powder rifle shooting.  Yep, the old way.  Get the ball in, powder, ram rod, then shoot at animal targets (metal that make a nice ringing sound when you hit them).
  6. Knife throwing.  We threw knives at wooden targets.
And maybe we did some more stuff, but I can't remember.  We then headed home and stopped at In-n-out on the way home!

I was real happy that the boys showed up who did.  We had a blast and additionally, grew some relationships among boys.

This sounds like a great activity for the boys - and men.  I guess rowing takes maturity and wisdom.  I'm proud that you have both.   Way to go - getting these boys out for some adventure.  You're doing a great job with these young men.  It takes time and effort to make and do these activities.
