I realized recently that I rarely write a blog about what is going on, normally I just let Harmony do that.  But I should probably share my thoughts on our life's adventures.  So here's a story of our trip to Normandie France.

Have you ever heard of Mont St. Michel?  I first heard about it in my French class in 10th grade.  Ever since then it has been a dream of mine to see it (seriously), and thanks to the Cowan family, I've realized that dream.  The Cowans - our twin family in Geneva - planned a trip to the Normandie area of France and invited us to join them.

Paris (Disneyland actually)

We started off at Disneyland Paris.  We thouroughly enjoyed it, even though it was quite crowded on Ascension day (France and Switzerland, and I suppose many other european countries have this day off).  Harmony planned out the whole thing and we got a lot of it done.  They have a different space mountain ride with a loop and some twists - quite intense actually (Cado wasn't tall enough to go on it).

Notice the Sleeping Beauty-esque trees surrounding the castle.

Normandie Beaches

The next day we visited the Normandie beaches (Utah and Omaha) and the American Cemetery.  It was very sobering and touching to visit a place where so many lives were heroically sacrificed for the freedoms of others.  A proud American moment.

A representation of the D-Day debarquement (whatever that is in english) by US and British troops.  This was at Point du Hoc where the rangers first climbed the cliff walls and took out German artillery.

While at the memorial cemetery we went down to the beach and lost track of time.  When we got back up to the cemetery, the grounds had been closed and we had the place to ourselves.  It was peaceful and enjoyable.  However, we were also locked in.  By the time we made it back to our car (after a slight reprimand from the guardian who let us out) Cado was so happy, he hugged the car.

Cado so happy to be back at the car after getting locked into the memorial grounds after closing.

Mont St. Michel

I can't explain why this one site has always been something I've wanted to see, maybe just because it is cool.  Mont St. Michel is an abbey/church built on a rock/moutain off the shore.  At high tide it is an island, the rest of the time it is possible to walk to it.  The parking lot closes to it has signs saying "at 6:07 p.m. today this parking lot will be covered with water.  Be sure to move your care before then."  We got to go through the winding streets of the town below (by town I mean tourist shops and restaurants) and a visit through the abbey at the top. It was worth the visit and you should go someday.  The kids and I took off our shoes (and the kids, their pants) and we went and walked through the mud that is covered with water at high tide.

Realizing my (never before divulged) lifelong dream of visiting Mont St. Michel.

We then went to the bretagne area of France and visited the port town of St. Malo.  Also very much worth the visit.  Ate crepes for dinner and more crepes for dessert.  Sunday we went to church in Caen France at a branch there and then drove home.

Thanks Cowans!

Looks like an awesome trip!  Just enough fun for both the kids and the parents.  I forgot how cool Mont St. Michel looks from a distance.  (And up close).  It is also one of the few places that Brian is dying to see.  Perhaps he heard about it in high school French class too.  I'm sure we will be making a trek there sometime as well.

I love Mont St Michel.  These pictures from your trip are just beautiful.  When Our family lived in Germany we were very close to the French border. We had so many wonderful experiences there. It's really great to see all your pictures. :)

Spencer- thanks for the blog and pictures.  Of course I am fascinated by the interplay of geology and history so appreciated your info on Mont St. Michel.

Image from www.lausanne-tourisme.ch.  The day we went, although in the winter, was very sunny with no snow!

Lausanne Switzerland is called the Olympic Capital.  No not because the Olympics were born there or have every been there - but because it's the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee.

We went there yesterday as a family, after Harmony's eye appointment.  I've been there many times for work, I have about half of my clients in or around Lausanne.  It's a 30-40 minute train ride.  The city is at a point that starts to get into the mountains at the eastern end of Lake Geneva and so it is very (ask our legs) hilly.  I think it has a lot of character and is a pretty city, having been there often for work I've wanted to share it with Harmony.

The weather was beautiful - probably around 65 and it was sunny.  As you can see from the pictures we were wearing light jackets.  Paisley feel asleep in the stroller and woke up with slightly burnt cheeks!

We walked through some beautiful neighborhoods and parks, by a few castles, down to the lake, to the Olympic Museum with amazing grounds of Olympic art work and some representation of Olympic records, ate pastries and candy, up to the old city and saw more cathedrals, bridges, etc.

Cado and Paisley were so pleasant the whole time.  It was a very enjoyable day.  Being out and in the sun was much needed after a dreary January and February and some long and some abrupt sicknesses.

Wow what beautiful city.  I am glad you were able to get out in the sunshine.  How is your eye?  Are you feeling better?   We have been worried about you and your little family, we love you.  Dad

Thanks to both of you for sharing pictures of Lausanne.  Everything in Geneva is like a storybook.  It is all so beautiful!  Sunshine does a body good after being cooped up in the winter.  I am certainly looking forward to sunshine and warm temperatures.  Another thing I look forward to is having all the snow melt in our front yard.  It will take a few rainstorms and very warm temperatures to make that happen since our Northern front yard gets very little sunshine.  I hope it is gone before Darrell comes home the middle of May.

Thanks also for sharing pictures of the kids.  They look so grown up.  They are adorable!
